Ubud adventure activities come in half-day and full-day sizes, and some pair neatly with a quad ride. Here is what rafting, tubing, swings, ziplines, terraces and cooking each cost in time.

After the quad, in brief

  • Ayung river timeAyung rafting lasts 2 hours and starts any time from 9 AM to 1 PM on the listing.
  • TubingThe Pakerisan tubing outing lasts about 2 hours and asks guests to arrive 30 minutes early.
  • SwingThe jungle swing in one listing has a maximum weight limit of 100 kg.
  • Whole-day itineraryA 9-hour terrace, temple and waterfall day starts from $13.
  • BundlesSome quad rides add a swing, a zipline or a pool, all in one booking.

How much day is left after a Gorilla Cave ride

This site's ride lasts 2 hours and ends with lunch at a base restaurant overlooking rice terraces, which leaves most of a day free if you start in the morning. The sensible question is how much of that day you want to fill, and with what: water, height, culture or food.

Ubud is built for stacking. Indonesia Travel calls Ubud compact enough for walking, cycling or a hired motorbike, though hilly, and places it in the central part of Bali.1,2 Most outings below are a short drive from town, and the map above pins the main places so you can see which ones cluster.

Keep an honest budget of your energy too. A quad ride is tiring in an unobvious way: your arms and shoulders have worked, and a wet change of clothes is a lump in your bag. Pick a single extra adventure for the same day, not a whole string of them, and spend the rest of your time at a table, in a pool or under a tree.

On the water: Ayung rafting and Pakerisan tubing

The Ayung is the river for rafting. It runs at Kedewatan in Ubud and is the widest and longest in Bali, at 75 kilometres, and the rafting trail is 10 kilometres and takes 1.5 to 2 hours.3,4 A guided listing lasts 2 hours on the river, starts at a time you choose between 9 AM and 1 PM, and notes a large number of steps up and down to the water. Ubud rafting is the first thing most people think of after a quad.

The river changes with the season. In the dry season the Ayung is class II and III, with some rough water and small drops but no considerable danger, while in the rainy season it rises to class IV and asks for better skills.5,6 The listing suits ages 5 to 65, though Indonesia Travel quotes 9 and Sobek 7, so confirm the operator's own rule.7,8

Tubing is the gentler cousin. The Pakerisan jungle river tubing outing lasts about 2 hours, uses a life jacket in case you cannot swim, and ends with a light lunch of fried rice or fried noodles. It starts from $15, rated 4.66 from 1,009 reviews, against rafting from $26, rated 4.74 from 2,435. Bring river sandals and a change of clothes for either.

  • Gorilla Cave ride2
  • Rafting the Ayung2
  • Pakerisan tubing2
  • Balinese cooking5.5 or more
  • Swing half day6 hours at most
  • Terraces and temples9

Rafting counts only the time on the river; the cooking class runs 5.5 to 8 hours and the half day 1 to 6.

Above the trees: swings and ziplines

The jungle swing is the Ubud photograph. Indonesia Travel presents the Ubud swing as a holiday picture taken in mid-air above the green landscape.9 A swing and waterfall listing says the jungle swing involves heights and safety equipment, that guests must follow staff instructions, and that the maximum weight limit is 100 kg.

Ziplines sit with the rice terraces. Two quad listings add a zipline over the Tegalalang rice terraces or at Alas Harum to a quad ride and a meal, from $22 and $22. The Alas Harum bundle also gives optional access to a pool that is closed to anyone under 18.

A swing is not for everyone. The swing listing does not recommend the activity for pregnant women or guests with heart conditions or serious medical issues, and the bundle that includes the pool says the day is not recommended for pregnant guests or anyone with back or heart conditions. Read the health line before you pay, and ask the operator when in doubt.

Rice terraces, temples and waterfalls by car

The terraces of Tegallalang are the classic outing. Indonesia Travel puts them a 20-minute drive north of Ubud and suggests going early, when the sun is still young, before the Monkey Forest.11,18 The terraces are watered by the subak system, a system tradition credits to the sage Rsi Markandeya.19

A full-day listing strings the highlights together. It lasts 9 hours and spends 75 minutes at each of five stops: the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a rice terrace, the Tirta Empul temple, a coffee plantation and Tibumana Waterfall, from $13, rated 4.96 from 4,439 reviews. The listing says the half-day option does not cover all the destinations and does not include entrance tickets.

A half day is lighter. A Monkey Forest and Tegalalang tour with a swing lasts up to 6 hours, and lists 1 hour in the car, 1 hour at the forest, 45 minutes in the car and 30 minutes at the terraces, from $18. Neither day pairs well with a morning quad ride, so book them for a day of their own.

Cooking and slow afternoons

Food is the quiet adventure. A cooking class at an organic farm lasts from 5.5 to 8 hours, takes at most 14 people per group, and teaches 6 authentic Balinese meals, from $30, rated 4.96 from 2,005 reviews. It is a full commitment of a day, so treat it as an alternative to the quad, not a follow-up.

A slower option is a swim. A listing that pairs a swing with a waterfall stop mentions Goa Raja or Tegenungan for swimming, and a waterfall day warns that conditions may change after rain and may not suit swimming. Ask before you pack swimwear, and keep your phone away from the edge.

If the plan is nothing at all, the lunch at this site's base restaurant is a good start, with the terraces in view. Ubud also rewards an afternoon walk: Indonesia Travel suggests Campuhan when the weather is cooler.1

When the operator bundles it for you

Some operators sell the combination as one product. A Gorilla Face quad ride with a jungle swing, a waterfall and a meal lists a duration from 1.5 to 8 hours and starts from $23, rated 4.87 from 582 reviews. A quad ride with Ayung rafting lists 3 to 8 hours, from $16, rated 4.85 from 6,509 reviews.

A bundle saves you the logistics, and it takes away your choice of order. Listings say pickup is optional, that the pickup time you choose is the actual pickup time, and that guests without pickup must reach the base themselves. A private bundle adds an MPV transfer, with a maximum group size per vehicle stated in its listing.

One listing is blunt about the alternative: swings, rafting and ziplines take place in a different place from the ATV track, so a day that holds them all means driving between them. Do the sums before you choose, and count the road time as part of the day.

Ordering the day so nothing is rushed

Put the weather-dependent things first. Indonesia Travel suggests the morning for better light on the river, and the Tegalalang terraces early too.10,18 A quad ride is happy in rain, as listings say it runs rain or shine, so it can take the afternoon if the sky closes in.

Leave a gap between the wet things. Rafting asks guests to be in good physical condition and to wear water shoes for the walk to the river, and a quad ride leaves you muddy, so a shower and a dry set of clothes sit between the two, not one pair of wet shorts. The Viator record for this site's ride lists access to shower facilities among its inclusions, and the sibling Gorilla Face listing says its base provides them too.

Finally, book the extra with a cancellation window you can use. This site's ride refunds you in full if you cancel a day ahead, and most of the outings above list free cancellation too, so you can move a booking if the weather turns.
